About CAC

The Center for Arts and Culture (CAC) at the Central European University (CEU) was established in 2003 with the aim to stimulate research and curricula development in the field of arts & culture and cultural policy, to stir culture-related debate within the university, and to provide the CEU community with an inspiring artistic program that would bring together students from all disciplines, academic staff and Budapest citizens.

Artistic Projects • CAC organizes in-house artistic events at CEU that are aimed at bringing an additional dimension to the experience of studying at the University – an artistic dimension that is there to remind us about what makes the world spin.

Rules and procedures for organising of exhibitions

In the Spring of 2008 an Arts Committee was established at CEU with the aim of combining the activities of both the Center for Arts and Culture and Student Services in the area of arts/exhibitions under one decision-making body and thus better coordinating the hosting of exhibitions at the university. With CAC in the center of its activities, the new Arts Committee aims at harmonizing incoming visual arts events in terms of content, time/duration and location.

Members of the Arts Committee are: Dessislava Gavrilova (Director, Center for Arts and Culture), Gerda Jonasz (Environmental Studies Department, PhD; Student Union), Ildikó Rüll (ERO), Marcell Sebők (Assistant Professor, Medieval Studies), Judit Radics (Student Welfare Officer, Student Services), Lilla Földy (coordinator, CAC), Karolin Benkő (CAC).

The Arts Committee has worked out a policy and developed guidelines for its implementation.

Key principles:

CEU students, faculty and staff are encouraged to turn to the committee with their initiatives.

CEU welcomes and hosts exhibitions that:

Although we appreciate the inherent value of art beyond its instrumentalisation, at CEU we give less priority for exhibitions that manifest themselves as "art for art's sake". We welcome projects that fall into the above criteria and we seek to secure internationalism (in terms of artists and issues) of the CEU - hosted exhibitions.
Exhibitons should last for at least 10 days and should be labelled and announced in English. When choosing location for the exhibition, security issues should be taken into consideration.

How to proceed if you would like to organise an exhibition at CEU?

If you would like to organise an exhibition you should prepare the following documents:

  1. Narrative description of the project
  2. CV of the author(s)
  3. Visual supporting material
  4. Budget, including information how the costs are to be met.
Please, send the above information in electronic format to cac@ceu.hu.

Catalogues and other printed supporting material could also be submitted to Lilla Földy, CAC, Zrínyi u. 14., floor 6, office 602.

Decisions on proposed exhibitions will be taken by the arts committee within two months after the submission.

Please, note that AC only acts as a decision-making and advising, and not an organizing body.

The accepted projects will be carried out by the unit that proposed them. The AC will seek for ways to contribute financially to the organisation of the accepted projects, but does not have the responsibility to fully finance them.

Academic Projects • CAC invites outstanding cultural scholars to hold culture-related public lectures, seminars, or roundtable discussions with representatives of the academic community. The center aims at introducing culture-related curricula and research at CEU. Through these activities CAC makes sure that culture stays high on the University agenda.
